Calvo: Creating Your Own Genre

Calvo gets down into the hard talk of his brand new studio, lots of new music and creating that unique sound which he brings through with his tracks.

Calvo is one of the high-flying House artists on Armada Music at the moment. He has developed a sound which is hard to rival and it has a unique style to it. With recent releases such as ‘Hard 2 Find’, as well as his huge hits such as ‘Vicious Girl’ and ‘Need U’, he is renowned for his quality, his ability to create hits and has become a well-respected artist. All these reasons are exactly why Calvo has gained such support from fellow artists and his fans over the last while.

The latest single ‘Hard 2 Find’ has been supported by the likes of Lost Frequencies, Sam Feldt and many more, and the fan base have reacted very well. I saw on Spotify that the plays have grown up so much, which is good for the new genre that I have made” claimed Calvo. This new genre is exactly what fans have fallen for, the sounds which he has introduced, mixed and connected. There are elements of Deep House, House and Future House, all blended in together, which makes it extremely exciting.

The song was recorded a year ago here in Amsterdam and I was playing around with the vocals. And I found out that it sounds better if we make it more like, slowly House, a little bit of Moombhaton and stuff like that, because the vocal has so much character.

The good thing is for fans of Calvo is the fact that he has recently re-built his studio, which could mean plenty of tracks on the way from the artist. So to learn a little bit more about his production set-up, Calvo explained it a little better. “My new studio contains very simple equipment and still working on a good DRW and working now with Genelics, because before I worked with KRK’s, and I’ve got on-board plug-in’s, no hardware anymore.” And Calvo has worked with many vocalist’s over his time, especially in his original mixes. With this, he talked about working with vocalists, how difficult it is to work with them on certain tracks when it comes to ideas over the internet.

Yeah sometimes I work with the vocalist over the internet and this is pretty hard. They have their own feeling on how to sing the song and I can’t push them to the right way. The best case is having them in my studio, or a different studio, and we can work out the track together, it’s always best.”

Now Amsterdam Dance Event is one of the key, if not the key meeting place for the dance music industry. It brings in the likes of promoters, fellow artists, journalists, industry professionals, the works. But for artists, it’s always good to catch up with fellow artists to see how they are getting along, but also to bounce ideas of each other and potentially lock down some collaboration ideas. Calvo talks about how “ADE is perfect” for such ideas.

Yesterday I met so many people, and they showed me new music, they came up with headphones and MP3 players, phones, and it was so sick to hear so many great songs. It’s a pleasure for me to be here and speak to so many people, thinking about music, what’s cool and not cool and to see where the next House sound.” The rising House star, with his own sound and his own style, still wanting to see where the new House sound is heading, because you always have to stay on top of the game (this shows off his ambition and engagement with the scene.

Calvo will also be performing at the Lost Frequencies event at this year’s ADE with artists such as The Magician and many more performing. ADE is also known for a lot of new music to arrive on the scene, so it was interesting to hear that his set has no real pre-planning to it, due to the fact that he has to fit in with the sound and the track selection of those on after him. “To be honest, my set is not prepared because there are guys playing before me and I don’t want to play the same songs, I want to react on what I have to play, but yes, there will be a lot of new music which I am guaranteed to play“.

So on a final note of catching up with Calvo, we got down to the dirt on what was going to take place over the next few months, what fans can expect and what a few of the new tracks would be over the coming months. “I remixed my own track ‘Hard To Find’ so that will be played on Saturday. I also remixed Showtek’s ‘Mellow’ and I also have new stuff with Bakermat.” On that note, I cannot wait to hear the remix of ‘Mellow’, it will certainly be insane.
