Dance music has become an industry where no matter what age you are, you can get involved with it. Obviously going to shows and festivals, you have to be of a certain age but actually becoming a DJ or producer has become so easy to get involved within due to technological advances and the opportunities out there. Enter Federico Gardenghi hailing from Italy. Aged 13 years old. Making a better career for himself than I could have done in the last ten years. He has performed to thousands at festivals, hung out with some of the biggest names in the underground dance music scene and has been delivering a solid selection of tunes with each show he puts on. It’s crazy.

During Amsterdam Dance Event, I caught up with Federico Gardenghi to chat to him. It’s a little weird chatting to a 13 year old but this kid was someone who knew exactly what he wanted and where he wanted to go. So we touched first on how he became involved within dance music.

Since I was 4 years old, I was listening to music every day, all genres of music as well. And then one day I asked my father, ‘Daddy who is the number one DJ in the world’. He told me, ‘Fede, it’s Armin Van Buuren’. From this moment on, I started to follow Trance music and started to DJ from a very young age. However on another occasion, a promoter organizing an event told me that if I wanted to play there,  I would have had to play Techno. At this point, I asked ‘What is Techno’ and I started listening. Since then I fell in love with Techno.”

Hearing this come from Federico was actually quite inspiring for me to see a kid with so much ambition, with so much potential and holding a clear direction for exactly what he wanted to do. I just wanted to buy the latest video game when I was 13 years old. So it was time to see how the experience was for Federico Gardenghi, as he has performed to thousands of people at festivals, shows and events around the world.

The experience has been amazing. I am really happy with how everything has been going over the last few months. I never thought it would have happened so soon.” And when asked if he gets nervous. “Sure I am always nervous before my sets, but when I start to play on a stage, I get all of the energy that I need to play. So once I get started, I get really excited. And I cannot wait for the next show.”

Amsterdam Dance Event allowed Federico to showcase his track selection at the Armada Invites event, where he opened the day’s proceedings with a solid House set. Following him, names such as Danny Howard, Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez, Kevin and Dantiez Saunderson and many others all performed. And Federico was on the same poster as these guys. Many of them legends.

I’m super excited. I am 13 and some of these guys have been playing for thirty years. So to see my face and my name on the poster alongside many of these guys who are legends within House and Techno, it is really hard to believe.

This seemed like the right moment to get to know a few of the tracks which maybe have stood out for Fede, but it was at this time where he said he prefers not to say. “I don’t have a prepared playlist when I play so I don’t really have any favourite sounds I always play. Every week or month I have new sounds, so when I perform, I have at least fifty songs to choose from, so I choose these songs depending on how the crowd is reacting.”

Rounding off the interview with Federico Gardenghi, I asked him about his future plans and what he would most like to achieve over the next few years. “The journey continues, step by step, little by little and I really hope to play some big shows and festivals. Playing at Armada Invites and shows in Zurich are my biggest achievements so far, and I just hope to continue this. This is my real passion and I really love music. Production is also really important and because I am only 13 years old, I will have to go to production school and learn all of the secrets, all of the plug-ins and hopefully I will release something after that.”

I know I can say this a lot where I say that this is a talent to watch out for, this is a producer or DJ who is set to achieve big things, but I really mean it with Federico Gardenghi. This is a kid who at the age of 13 has achieved so much more than some producers and DJs who have been working on the scene for many many years. He is going to be a major name in the years to come and we wish him all of the best.
