Son Of 8 are one of those talented production acts who have been releasing high quality releases within the House scene. Over the last few months, they have released some huge tracks, covering classic tracks such as ‘With Every Heartbeat’. Now the duo have arrived back on the scene, with ‘I Found You’, arriving on their newly launched 8 House Records. The label is set to be a platform for their own music, as well as upcoming talents. So we got to know what 8 House Records is about and what is set to come over the next few months.

Son of 8 have been very busy within the dance music industry with a number of high profile releases. What was it that enticed Son of 8 into dance music, and how did the duo come about?

We have been friends for years working on things individually. We have worked for big brands in the past like Ministry of Sound and Hed Kandi and released under different names.

We started a few tracks together in the studio about 4 years ago now and Son of 8 came from that. We started to develop a distinct upbeat sound trying to fuse underground sounds with a blend of new and old techniques. We really enjoyed working together and have similar music tastes.

‘With Every Heartbeat’, the collaboration with Phats & Small, reached number two in the overall Beatport Chart. Was this one of the stand out moments for the duo?

Yes that was amazing. It also got to No 1 in the Track It Down house charts and is up to 3.6 million streams on Spotify. It also got radio airplay around the world so it is great to see your music being appreciated by so many people.

One which is sure to be a real mark is the launch of your new label 8 House Records. To know you will be releasing your music on your own platform, surely that must be a surreal feeling?

Yes it is amazing to be able to control your own releases and get your sounds out there plus also showcase hot new talent.

Working with Armada Music, Zulu Records and Spinnin’ Records, will you be drawing ideas from your experience from these labels and using it for 8 House Records?

Yes definitely, they are great labels and do thinks the right way. They are labels that we admire and look up too.

The label is also set to showcase upcoming talent, so from an A&R perspective, what will Son Of 8 be looking for with regards to releases on the label?

It is all things house really with the emphasis on great quality house music with superb production value. We are going to put some of our own music out but also work with a blend of established artists and fresh new talent.

And the first single is set to arrive in the form of ‘I Found You’. How did the track come about and where did you draw the inspiration from for the track?

With this track we were trying to make a really uplifting high energy house track that would make the crowd smile and put their hands in the air at our gigs. We had the track finished without a vocal. We dropped in a sample of Acapella ‘I Found You’ and it just worked. The lyrics are beautiful and make everyone smile. We wanted to put our own twist on the track so we had it re-sung by a great female artist we work with to give the vocal a different twist.

When listening to the track, it has obviously sampled the iconic vocals from the Axwell original. To work with these original samples, how difficult was it to form and produce a track around this?

We worked around the original vocal to start with from an old Acapella we had. At first we played about with it using the vocal in various different ways to try and keep away from how it originally sounded but once we laid it out, it was obvious that the whole vocal needed to be used as it fitted perfectly over the arrangement.

Because of clearance issues and the overall quality of the sample we had been using, we decided to get it re-sung. The vocalist that’s used is a backing singer with The Jules Holland band and also tours with Roger Waters and Pink Floyd. Her name is Louise Clare Marshall and we have since used her on another Son of 8 track.

Were there any techniques or processes used to help with the production of the track?

Nothing out of the ordinary on this particular track. The piano structure was probably the toughest part of the track to get right as we played about with a few ideas before settling on how it is now. The vocal was fairly straight forward. Sometimes using old vocal samples can prove difficult but once we decided to get the vocal re-sung, there wasn’t much more we needed to do with it. It was mostly done on Ableton. Valhalla Reverb is a plug in used on the track and we also used new instruments from Output called Substance & Exhale as they give us that modern up to date quality of sound which is so important to us in our production.

An overall picture then, what can fans of Son Of 8 and the newly launched 8 House Records expect over the next few months?

Great house music. Music connects people I think. There seems to be so many things dividing everyone in the world and music is always one of those things that brings people together irrespective of race, colour, religion or creed. 8 House will release our interpretation of good house music. If you listen to our weekly radio show; also available on iTunes, Mixcloud and Soundcloud, you will get a feel for what this is.

And finally, is there any talents on the scene who you expect to feature prominently within dance music over the next few months?

We have worked with a really good producer in Liverpool called Kinnerman. He has had tracks played by some huge artists and a release with Elrow. He runs Karuba Studios in Liverpool and there is a lot of great talent working from there at the moment.
