Kolsch has become a real hit name within the UK and the wider electronic dance music scene. This is down to a number of things. BBC Radio One DJs Pete Tong and Danny Howard have supported various works from the artist, while his ‘Speicher’ series has produced some spectacular tracks. Now the Danish artist is back with his newest album ‘1989‘.

It’s the third album to arrive from Kolsch in the last five years or so. His first was ‘1977‘ which was influenced by his early childhood, before moving onto ‘1983‘, again inspiration from his life just a few years later. Now he has finalised the chapters with his third album, a stunning thirteen track piece titled ‘1989’. And it’s wonderful. This is an album you could find yourself lost within. It’s been released on Kompakt Records, the label where Kolsch has found himself a home on.

The album itself has a number of classic Kolsch feelings within it, the real power of the melody while also focusing on strings and other elements. ‘Serij’ is the first proper track on the album and features Gregor Schwellenbach. This is a track which really focuses on the strings, while riveting synths dominate the background. It’s a quality piece which really takes you to a whole new atmosphere. ‘In Bottles’ is another stand out piece, featuring the wonderful AURORA and this really is an atmospheric masterpiece. With the melodies providing the energy in the background, while the vocals of AURORA just add that soothing and haunting aspect. A true piece of art.

Kolschs’ stand out single to date, ‘Grey’, also features on the album with a slight difference, it seems as though an album version has been included. Also standing out on the album are the tracks ‘Grau’ which has a real progressive tone to it, ’14’ which really takes hold with the pianos, and ‘YKPI’ which delivers a soothing energy with the melodies. However all of the tracks are worth a listen. This is a journey and ‘1989’ is a journey you must undertake.
