It’s only been a short space of time on the dance music scene but KC Lights has already built up quite the reputation. Having supported the likes of MK on a number of gigs, as well as producing music alongside the legendary House icon, plus many others, KC Lights has gone on to become quite the name within the House music scene. His latest single ‘Sundown (Loving Me)’ has already been identified as one of those huge Summer anthems, and we expect a lot more from the producer and DJ over the next few months.

It was only a few years ago that you launched your career as KC Lights following your graduation from university. Tell us a little about how you became involved in dance music. Was this always something you wanted to do?

Since a very early age music has been the only thing I’ve wanted to do. Whether it be performance, teaching, composing, producing, DJing, as long as I had a career in music I knew I’d be happy. For me, dance music came a little later. I went to Ibiza for the first time with my friends when I was 17 and that kind of sparked a real interest in dance music for me. I dabbled a little in production whilst I was at Uni and by the time I graduated I was a keen bedroom producer and DJ and itching to pursue a career in the music industry.

You also grew up in the Glasgow area which has a renowned diverse music scene. How influential was the city for you?

I’ve always been close to Glasgow but I actually grew up on an Island on the west coast of Scotland called Bute. There’s a certain romance and soulfulness about music and art in Glasgow that completely draws you in. When I left Uni I knew at the time that I didn’t want to base myself anywhere other than Glasgow. Like you mentioned the music scene is so vibrant and diverse there and there is just generally an excitement and energy surrounding it.

Over the last few years you have racked up a considerable amount of success with hits released on Spinnin’ Records, Nothing Else Matters Records and other such labels. How has the journey been so far for you?

It’s been incredible. Naturally there are some tough days but it’s always been really exciting moving forward and I’ve been lucky enough to work with some amazing labels and artists so far. The Nothing Else Matters team are great and I’m looking forward to doing more with them.

In terms of support, Danny Howard, MK and other high profile names have supported you and your music. What is it like to know that major artists out there, and fans, continue to support the music which you produce?

Essentially this is the most important thing about being a producer. To know there are people around the world enjoying the music you’re putting out and to see first hand, when playing a show, crowds dancing and having a good time to something you’ve created is an amazing experience and keeps me hungry for more. The support specifically from MK and Danny Howard has been incredible and has helped so much in introducing my music to a much wider audience, I owe a lot to those guys!

I wanted to touch on your new vocal single ‘Sundown (Loving Me) with Rae Hall. This is a single perfect for the Ibiza parties, the Summer vibes. How did the track come about? Where did the inspiration come from?

I wrote the instrumental a good while back and Nothing Else Matters released it as a club record earlier in the year. The original idea was to write a track that had a kind of summer festival vibe to it but would also work in a small club in the early hours. I’ve played it out in both scenarios and it always goes down a treat! It had been getting loads of support and so far has racked up nearly 1.5 million views so it felt right to get a big vocal on it and go the extra mile! Rae and I had previously been chatting about collaborating on something and I knew she would be perfect to jump onto Sundown with a vocal. She absolutely smashed it with this one and even with high expectations never imagined it would turn out as well as it did!

Working with a vocalist such as Rae Hall, is this a whole different experience in the studio when working with a vocals and fusing them in with the track you have produced?

It’s great working on more underground club records and then taking them out on tour and testing them out. It’s then really exciting getting a big vocal and transforming that into something more suited for radio and listening to at home or in the car. An experience I’ll definitely experiment with in the future.

Not only this, but you also have a number of high profile remixes to your name. How different is working on an original track compared to a remix for another artist?

I don’t actually approach a remix that differently than an original. Generally for me it’s just about getting an main idea down quickly and then develop things from there. I tend to experiment a little more when remixing so that’s pretty fun.

Looking to the future, is there any artists out there that KC Lights would like to work with? You have already produced tracks with the likes of MK, Mike Mago and others.

Some other producers I’m really digging at the moment are Camelphat, Illyus & Barrientos, Icarus and Jax Jones. Would be great to get into the studio with some of these guys.

On an overall note, what can fans expect to hear in terms of new music from you over the next few months? Is there any new music on the way to follow on from ‘Sundown (Loving Me)’?

Yeah loads! I’m working on a follow up to Sundown (Loving Me), some more remixes are on the way and some really cool collaborations are in the works as well.

And finally, what does KC Lights hope to achieve over the next few years? Is there something which you have pinpointed as an achievement?

Nothing specific, just to keep working and experimenting with new music. Lot’s more shows and at some point down the line I’d love to work on an album and develop a live show!
