Erick Morillo talks drug addiction, his ego and not being able to handle not being top dog.
Erick Morillo has been a pillar in the House music scene for very many years, dominating the club scene in New York before becoming an international superstar that toured and headlined many shows. However in a recent keynote interview at the IMS Ibiza conference, Erick Morillo talks drug addiction, how he couldn’t handle his ego and more.
In plain English, not many people have the balls to open up about such serious issues, but when Erick Morillo talks drug addiction, his ego, the rise to fame and also the rise of those around him, you have a feeling that it’s nothing but the truth and that’s exactly what you get. Being the top DJ and one of the respected names in the scene is a big task, but when you start to see those around you rising up and achieving more than what you are, it was sure to be a culture shock.
All these DJs got bigger than me, and my ego couldn’t take it. It was hard for my ego to say that your not top dog any more. It was Ketamine, it was a mental addiction and I had to deal with the problem. Once I did deal with the problem, my therapist helped me deal with my ego. – Erick Morillo
He goes on to talk about how he managed to get through it with a number of cool bits of advice, “staying true to yourself” was the main one as well as going on to say that you have to do what you want to do and what makes you happy, staying on the right path and achieving your goals. It takes a lot to admit when things aren’t going so well and it took a lot of courage I’m sure for Erick to get up on the stage and talk about such an intimate problem.
Respect to the master. The highlights are available and hopefully his full keynote interview will be available on line soon. You can listen to Erick’s latest track ‘Thunder & Lighting’ here.
