Over the last few years, Mau5trap has become ever more prominent with it’s roster of artists. They have grown a group of artists that have been churning out some brilliant electronic releases with the likes of Rezz, ATTLAS, Draft and many others. One of those others who has been on my own radar has been BlackGummy and he has just released the ‘Monolith‘ EP.
BlackGummy has been at the forefront of the label with some highly prominent releases in the last while. His ‘Singularity’ EP was one of the stand out releases on the label which he followed up with the ‘Impactor’ EP. And now he has just released the ‘Monolith’ EP and it is stunning, a beautiful piece of work. Four tracks have been produced and brought together and you will find yourself lost within the depths of this EP.
The first track to arrive on the EP is ‘Iconoclast‘ and this is one of the best tracks to come from BlackGummy in his whole collection. A riveting bass line pounds through the track before the brilliant drum samples come through and the deep layered synths become more and more apparent within the track. It has a huge atmosphere surrounding it, one which is dark and intimate, and when it drops with the synths, it will take hold of you.
‘Arp Makes Sphinx Purr‘ is another brilliant track from the artist. Again it features those deep layered electronic synths which just ooze out energy and infection. The way in which the track builds up and takes you, the listener, on a journey is just utterly stunning. But it is the electronic layers, machine like sounds, that really make this track. ‘Desert Fire‘ is a pumping track and this comes through with the bass line. A beat which just keeps the track ticking along and before long, BlackGummy has added his intricate layers and sounds to the track to fill it all out. One for the underground.
‘Ediface‘ rounds off the ‘Monolith’ EP and this is one which has the power and ability to become a Techno monster. Again, BlackGummy has included a huge pumping beat to keep the track anchored before bringing through the synths and melodies into the track. Atmospheric, deep and dark, this track has it all. It’s definitely more fine-tuned towards the minimal movement but it certainly works. This is an artist to look out for in the continued future.
